What a day, what a day E-mail
nonpointBy Ryne Roulette

“What’s it like hearing your own song played over the P.A. system?” we asked Elias Soriano of South Florida’s Nonpoint following their March 7th performance at Revolution in Appleton.

“I feel accomplished,” was his response.

And accomplished he should feel. After rocking Revolution’s sold out crowd for roughly 45 minutes, floods of fans came to greet them after the show.

Revolution in Appleton brought Nonpoint and Cold together for a co-headlining tour on a surprising non-cold March Sunday night.

Witnessing Nonpoint live is not like other metal shows. From the second they hit the stage, they want you moving. If you’re not moving, you can bet your friendly neighbor will get you going. The energy from the band feeds right into the crowd. They rocked new and old songs, with highlights being “What a Day,” “In the Air Tonight,” and the headbanging closer of their evening, “Bullet with a Name.”

Turn it Up!: Zoo Animal E-mail
turnitup

It’s easily argued that the grunge rock movement died with Kurt Cobain in April of 1994 but a distinct batch of millennium bands are proving that warm debris still lingers from that extinguished fire.

In the current radio ready world of ex-American Idol contestants, Minneapolis band Zoo Animal may not fit into Top 40 rotation between Kelly Clarkson and David Cook, but their puzzle piece does fit snugly in the respected underground music scene of the Twin Cities.

zooanimalsLead singer/songwriter Holly Newsom’s voice rings a little softer than Dolores O'Riordan and with more sentiment than Leslie Feist, presenting herself as a silent assassin onstage. The band’s other two members, bassist Tim Abramson and drummer Thom Burton, hold just as much reserved intensity while performing the group’s earthy, minimalist Minneapolis tones.

On the Boards: All the world’s a stage… E-mail
By Reed Meschefske

In a highly publicized interview Frank Deford asked U.S. Skating star Johnny Weir if he felt that men’s skating should be “more butch,” to which the Olympian responded “They (sport’s fans) would rather see spandex-ed men hitting each other’s asses.”

From the extravagant wardrobes to the intricately choreographed movement, male figure skating has long been a punching bag for being too effeminate, soft or outlandish, with many even postulating whether it should be held in the same regard as professional baseball or football, or should it be considered a form of theatrics? As with all great forms of performance, it should be considered both.
